Sherbourne Museum has a large, wide-based collection that reflects the geological, historical, industrial, cultural and social aspects of Sherborne’s heritage, as well as its natural history. Highlights include a unique medieval wall-painting, fossils from the Inferior Oolite, a touch-screen version of the exquisitely illuminated Sherborne Missal, silk and gloving exhibitions, agricultural tools, 200 botanical watercolours by pioneering Edwardian artist Diana Ruth Wilson and a vast photographic archive which has recently been linked to a digital database for easy public access. We also stage temporary exhibitions which reflect anniversaries and festivals in the town, as well as events of wider concern; some of these are created by local schools.

We actively encourage school visits and were awarded the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge in October 2012. We instigated a School Liaisons committee where museum staff regularly meets with teachers to assess the needs of students and how the Museum can provide for them. Local schools stage annual temporary exhibitions. Work experience students and students working on the community aspect of the International Baccalaureate attend each year to learn conservation, display and front-of-house skills.

We have a variety of loans boxes with such themes as the Romans, Victorians, World War I and II, the Millennium, Remembrance & Peace which can be borrowed by schools for up to half a term. Boxes are also taken regularly to the Memory Café run by the Yeovil/Sherborne Alzheimer’s Society and to the Countrymen’s Club, a group of retired farmers set up by Future Roots, a social enterprise aiming to reconnect adults and children to the land.
