Our purpose is to increase understanding and appreciation of the use and significance of plastics in design during the 20th and 21st centuries. MoDiP has a changing programme of two themed exhibitions per year drawn from its extensive collections.
The plastics collection forms the basis of a specialist research resource offered by the Arts University Bournemouth and together with loan collections from the Plastics Historical Society and the Worshipful Company of Horners, MoDiP presents a comprehensive history of the use of natural and synthetic plastics in design.
Do look at our website www.modip.ac.uk for latest information.
MoDiP is keen to build partnerships with schools. Collections of objects relating to the national curriculum can be borrowed and workshops can arranged. MoDiP welcomes visits from school parties to the exhibitions by arrangement.
MoDiP is currently developing its outreach and reminiscence programme.

Martyn Rowlands was one of the first trained industrial designers to work with plastics in Britain. He tended to work through the development of models rather than by making drawings and his designs are noteworthy for their smooth, clean lines and their practicality. Rowlands was among the first designers to make the most of the relatively new injection moulding process and in 1966 his design for the now iconic Trimphone for STC won a prestigious Design Centre award. Rowlands’ association with MoDiP began in 2002 when he donated a collection of over seventy examples of his work to the museum. He subsequently became a fellow of the University and his work has been featured in a number of MoDiP exhibitions including Spotlight On in 2010.
